John Bird Sumner was born in 1780 and by the time of his death in 1862 he had not only become the first Evangelical Archbishop of Canterbury but had also presided as Archbishop, and formerly Bishop of Chester, over the most rapid period of urbanization and industrialization in Britain's history.
