Martyrs are the perfect disciples of Christ, imitating Him by sacrificing their lives. Their example has always encouraged the faith of others: ‘the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church’. In our own time, men and women are still dying as martyrs for Christ – for instance, the monks who were killed in the Atlas mountains in Algeria in 1996. This book tells of the very earlier martyrs in that same part of the world, North Africa, and of the country from which those monks mostly came, France.
