Jesus Were You Little? / Sally Metzger and Illustrated by Caroline Baker Mazure

“Out of the mouths of infants and nurslings you have brought forth praise” (Mt 21:16).

In Jesus, Were You Little?, a child, full of questions and wonder, takes readers on a journey of discovery, making Jesus real and relatable to young and old. With innocent curiosity, the child narrator asks the King of kings if he ever climbed a tree, spilled his milk, or skinned his knee.

“Were you little? Just like me?” the child inquires. 

Adventure by adventure, readers see that the child Jesus knew the joys, pains, and vulnerability of being “little,” and their empathy and love for him grows. Finally, with budding devotion, the child narrator asks the ultimate question: “Jesus, were you little? Just for me?” Readers join in the youngster’s joy at the answer.

About the Author

Sally Metzger taught Scripture and theology for more than 20 years to high school students and ministered to them outside the classroom as a retreat leader and spiritual director. She also spent many years in preschool and elementary school religion classes, using stories and song to nurture children’s love for Christ. She has a master’s degree in theology with a focus in pastoral care and is a chaplain with the Community of Hope International. She and her husband, Mike, live in Georgetown, Texas.
