The intellectual Newman often over-shadows the more personal and intimate nature of the mas as exemplified in this account of his frienships with a great number of women. Though mostly unknown now, their lives were of great interest to Newman who produced over the years a lively, compassionate and practical correspondence which not only throws new light on his own character but also illuminates the loves of these women. At a time when intelligent women faced a struggle to exxpress themselves and be heard, Newman provided a sympathetic ear and an encouraging voice in letters that are deeply affecting and full of wise counsel.
Joyce Sugg, like Newman, is a convert to the Roman Catholic Church from Anglicanism and has spend most of her life either in Oxford or Birmingham. After reading English at Somerville College, Oxford she taught in schools and at the Newman College of Education, Birmingham. She has previously published two books about Newman, a short biography and an anthology of his letters, as well as a number of essays and pamphlets. She now lives in Salisbury, Wiltshire and lectures in Britain and overseas.
