In this new collection of original essays, the writers go beyond the well-worn paths and explore less familiar subjects such as the ecclesiology of the Oxford Movement, the spread of the Movement's deas within parishes, the politics of the Tractarians, the importance of Newman's tour of Italy, the Oxford Movement and the revival of patristic theology, the social conscience of the Oxford Movement, the regional growth of Tractarianism and John Henry Newman's time in Oxford. 

Paul Vaiss received his degree at the Sorbonne and wrote a doctoral dissertation on the evolution of Newman's thought. He is currently Professor of Religious History and British Civilisation at Paris X University (Nanterre). He as written several articles on Newman and the Oxford Movement.

John Henry Newman, (1801-1890) was a Roman Catholic priest and cardinal, a convert from Anglicanism in October 1845. In his early life, he was a major figure in the Oxford Movement to bring the Church of England back to its Catholic roots. Eventually his studies in history persuaded him to become a Roman Catholic. Both before and after becoming a Roman Catholic, he wrote influential books, including Via Media, Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845), Apologia Pro Vita Sua (1865-66) and the Grammar of Assent (1870). He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.
